On-Page vs Off-Page SEO: What Each One Does and Where to Start

In this article
SEO is often split into three parts: technical, on-page and off-page. Our technical SEO checklist covers the first. This post explains the other two and where a small business should start.
On-page SEO: what you control on your own pages
- Search intent: does the page answer what the searcher wants? Look at what already ranks for the query.
- Content depth: real details, examples, prices or ranges, process and FAQs, written for people.
- Titles, headings and meta descriptions that describe the page clearly.
- Internal links from related pages and posts.
- Images with alt text and fast formats.
- Structured data that matches visible content.
Our on-page SEO service maps one main query to each page so your own pages do not compete with each other.
Off-page SEO: the reputation you earn elsewhere
- Links from relevant, real websites: industry sites, local news, partners, suppliers, associations.
- Brand mentions and reviews.
- Citations for local businesses: consistent name, address and phone on directories.
- Digital PR: useful data, guides or stories that give people a reason to cite you.
Google's spam policies call out link schemes such as buying links, excessive link exchanges and low-quality directory or article spam (Google spam policies). Our off-page SEO work avoids all of these.
How they work together
A link to a thin page does little. A great page nobody links to can struggle in competitive searches. The usual order: fix technical blockers, make your key pages genuinely the best answer, then earn links and mentions to those pages.
Where to start this month
- Pick your five most important service or product pages.
- Check each one against the searches you want, and improve content and titles.
- Link to them from your homepage, menus and related blog posts.
- List five realistic places to earn a link or mention (partners, local press, associations).
- Track enquiries from organic search in GA4, not just rankings.
