If you run an HVAC company with a handful of trucks, Google Local Services Ads (LSA) are probably the cheapest way to get a phone ringing from people who need a technician now. They are also the most misunderstood. This guide covers what LSA cost looks like, how setup works, and what the Google Verified badge actually means. For how we handle this for contractors, see our Local Services Ads management and HVAC marketing pages.

Every number below is industry data with its source and date. It is not Repvox results, and your market will differ.

What Local Services Ads are (and how they differ from regular Google Ads)

LSA appear at the very top of Google results for searches like "AC repair near me", above regular search ads, with your business name, rating, review count and a green badge. You do not bid on keywords. You choose job types and a service area, set a weekly budget, and you are charged per lead (a call, message or booking), not per click. Regular Google Ads, by contrast, charge per click and put you in charge of keywords, ad copy and landing pages.

The practical difference for a small HVAC shop: LSA are simpler to run, but you have less control. Google decides which leads count and how you rank.

What HVAC Local Services Ads cost

Costs vary by city, season and how many competitors bid. For a national reference point, SearchLight, Feb 2026 analyzed 888 contractors, about $6.72M in spend and 126,650 leads. In that data HVAC averaged $51 per lead, a 44.0% book rate and an average ticket of $2,110. Across all trades the blended cost per lead was $53, and the cost per paying customer was $233.

Treat those as industry averages, not a quote. A quick sanity check with your own numbers: a $1,500 monthly LSA budget at $51 per lead is roughly 29 leads (simple arithmetic, not a forecast). If you book fewer than half of them, your cost per booked job will be well above $51. That is why we judge LSA on booked jobs, not lead count.

Also note a finding from SearchLight, Jul 2026: only 22% of all conversions were booked on the call itself, and about two-thirds of unbooked, qualified calls ended in "planned follow-up". The ad did its job; the loss happened after the phone rang. Answering fast and following up matters as much as the ad.

The Google Verified badge: what it is and how screening works

Before your ads run, Google screens your business. HVAC, plumbing and electrical sit in what Google calls the "urgent" tier, which gets extra pro-level screening. Exact requirements depend on your state and license type and change over time, so read the current list on Google, LSA screening requirements before you start. In general you should expect business verification, license and insurance checks, and background checks on owners or technicians.

Once approved, the badge appears on your ad and profile. It belongs to your business. An agency cannot earn it for you and should never claim the badge as its own. Be wary of anyone who says they can "guarantee" approval. Approval is Google's decision.

Setup checklist for an HVAC contractor

  1. Create the account yourself. You should own and be admin on the LSA account, and add your agency as a user. If an agency opens it under its own login, you cannot easily take it with you.
  2. Gather documents early: state or local license, general liability insurance, and details for owner and technician background checks. Delays here are the most common reason launches slip.
  3. Select every job type you actually do. Google's advice in Google, improve LSA performance is to select all job types, set service areas broadly (county level), add real photos of your team and work, and turn on message, booking and direct-business-search leads.
  4. Get your first reviews. Google notes some business types need 5 reviews before they show. Ask every customer; see our guide to getting Google reviews the right way.
  5. Set hours and budget. Match hours to when you can really answer. Missed calls hurt you (see below).
  6. Connect your Google Business Profile. A complete profile helps; see Google Business Profile management.

What decides whether your ad shows

According to Google, LSA ad rankings, LSA are an auction on bid and profile quality. Factors include search relevance, rating, number of reviews, average response time, high-quality images, verification checks and your enabled lead types. Google also warns that missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness. Higher-quality profiles may also pay lower costs per lead. In short: a fast-answering shop with strong reviews can beat a bigger bidder.

Common LSA mistakes

  • Not checking leads. Review each lead, and dispute ones that are clearly invalid (wrong service, outside your area, spam) through Google's dispute process.
  • Missing calls. Send after-hours calls to an answering service or turn on message and booking leads.
  • Budget runs out early. If your budget is gone by Wednesday, the weekend emergency calls go to your competitor.
  • No tracking after the lead. Without recording or a CRM match you cannot tell which leads became revenue. See call tracking for contractors.

When LSA are not enough

LSA are a strong first channel, but not the only one. Branded search is cheap protection: SearchLight, Jan 2026 reported a $34 branded cost per lead versus $149 non-branded for HVAC and plumbing combined. Once LSA run cleanly, a tightly controlled search campaign can add volume. Our pricing page shows how we scope this, and a free campaign audit will tell you where your account stands today.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google LSA approval take?

It depends on how quickly you submit documents and how fast background checks clear. Plan for days to weeks rather than hours, and start the paperwork before you need leads.

Can I run LSA and regular Google Ads at the same time?

Yes. They are separate products with separate budgets. Many contractors start with LSA and add a focused search campaign later.

Do LSA guarantee a number of leads?

No. Lead volume depends on your market, budget, reviews and responsiveness. Anyone promising a fixed number is guessing. Results vary.
